Johnny Clegg is an icon of South African music and one of the country's most celebrated artists internationally, selling more than five million albums worldwide. He is also a renowned activist and an accomplished anthropologist, academic, dancer and songwriter. He has won a number of national and international awards for his music and for his outspoken views on apartheid and migrant workers in South Africa. He was recently awarded three honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, CUNY and University of the Witwatersrand. On Freedom day in 2012, the 27th of April, Johnny Clegg received the presidential IKHAMANGA award as part of the National Orders ceremony. The National Orders are the highest honour a citizen can receive for his/her contribution to South Africa.
