The Brenthurst Foundation is focused on improving African economic performance and assisting in African capacity-building. We aim to create:
- Debate on the link between African development and security
- Constituencies and networks for African issues
- Excellence in African and European scholarship
We have pursued these objectives in various ways, including a long-standing cooperation in the UK and further afield with the London-based Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), the world's oldest think-tank, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Nelson Mandela RUSI-Brenthurst programme involved three components over a three-year funding cycle starting in 2006:
- Annual Nelson Mandela African Fellowship. This provided a unique opportunity for African scholars to undertake a fellowship at RUSI in Whitehall, during which they would engage in research focusing on the nexus between African security and development.
