Podcast: Greg Mills Believes a “Good Crisis” Can Improve a Country Economically

Greg Mills chatted to John Maytham on 567 Cape Talk about his new book, Why States Recover: Changing Walking Societies into Winning Nations – from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

“When you’re in trouble, whether you’re El Salvador during its civil war, or Costa Rica during its economic troubles in the 1980s, just to take two examples,” Mills says, “or Vietnam in the mid-1980s, when it suffered a widespread famine … when they had those moments of crisis they put in place the sorts of policies that enabled them not only to come out of it but to come out of it in a completely different way; much stronger, with a much better economic and development situation. So if you’re going to have a crisis, use it as an opportunity to change things which otherwise you might lack the political will to do.”
